Welcome to the annual running of the Gellibrand Derby, famous for the turn of speed shown by some of the competitors. This year due a very dry track we will not be having our famous snail race, but we will continue in the Spring Carnival spirit. Be prepared for horse racing, fashions on the field – although maybe not in the manner that you might expect

Please note that this is an evening of games in the Hall, we do not go trick or treating.

This week we will be meeting at the hall, but will not be in the hall. Please dress appropriately for the weather, bring a day pack with your drink bottle and pack your personal first aid kit.

The pilot knew that flying over the remote and rugged regions in Gellibrandia was risky. There was no safe way to ditch a crippled aircraft into the jungle, and if you miraculously survived the crash … how did you get rescued?

Jamboree-on-the-Internet
JOTI, Jamboree-on-the-Internet is the event on the third weekend of October when Scouts get together and gather in Cyberspace, a virtual Jamboree. JOTI in 2009 will be on the 16th – 18th October.

We will be starting from 10:00am on Saturday the 17th and will finish up Sunday 18th at 3:00pm.

What to bring?
At JOTI we spend the majority of the time with activities associated with computers and communication, however we do include a “treasure hunt” hike on the Saturday afternoon for approximately 1 – 2 hours (depending on which cub is navigating ?). Additionally, unless it is raining, all meals are eaten outside and the majority of the cubs choose to sleep outside in the tents.

Therefore, we need to ensure that the cubs have suitable clothing for the weather during the day as well as for when it gets colder at night.

JOTI Kit List

Sleeping bag
Sleeping mat or lilo (both for comfort and to help protect from the cold ground)
Blanket (most children’s sleeping bags are not sufficiently warm outside without a blanket)
Pillow
Warmer pyjamas than they would normally need in the house for the same weather
Beanie (to drag on when half asleep but getting cold at 5 am)
Socks

Change of clothes
Jumper
Toiletries
Suitable shoes for walking (sneakers are fine)

Book or game for a change of pace when they need it

No lollies or electronic toys/games please

Flight (Nature, Science and Technology)

Level 1 Flight
Green-Flight

1. Know and understand the safety rules for flying a kite.
2. Do any two of the following:
__ a. make and fly a glider.
__ b. make and fly a box kite.
__ c. make and fly an “ordinary” kite.
3. Make and test a model parachute.
4. Draw and label the parts of a hot air balloon and explain how a hot air balloon flies.

Level 2 Flight
Red-Flight

1. Make and fly a model plane.
2. Identify five aircraft either in the air or from pictures or models. Explain the use of each aircraft and how it is propelled
3. Explain how airplanes are steered in the air and how they take off and land.
4. Inspect an airplane at close quarters. Warch a plane taking off and landing. Observe what happens, make sketches of the process and explain what is happening.

For the first week back, we will have a nice easy start. We will be going ten pin bowling.

Oz Tenpin Epping, 41–53 Miller Street, Epping.
(just off Cooper Street, behind the Leisure Centre)
Meet us at Epping at 7.00pm for a 7.20pm start.

CO$T:
There will be a charge of $12.50 for the night.
This will include the hire of shoes, 1 game and a light meal:
