Eltham Scout Group End of Year Family BBQ : Mon 2011-DEC-19
To end the year we are having a family barbecue at the Scout Hall
(no uniform required) The Scout Troop will provide the sausages, sauce, bread and icy poles.

TIME: from 6.30pm
BRING: chairs/picnic rug, drinks, glasses and something to share ie salad, chips, fruit etc.
RSVP: For catering purposes could you please RSVP to eltham_scout_troop@bigpond.com or originalfrosty@optusnet.com.au by Monday 12th December 2011 with your NAME and the number of adults and number children attending.

Gellibrand Pack – End of Year BBQ – Thursday 1st December
It’s that time again, doesn’t it come around quickly. The traditional BBQ will be happening again this year. Sausages/bread for cubs and siblings. Those slightly older may prefer to have a more substantial piece of meat (BYO)

Start: 6:30PM – note early time. The BBQ will be fired up around then; do not feel you have to be there at that time, come when you can, go when you need to.

End: Around 8:30PM or there about

There will be craft activities for all, and, hopefully photos of the year that was. If you have any photos you wish to share of the pack activities can you please give them to either Rama or Akela by Monday, 28th November.

[NOTICE] 2011-Nov-25/26 City Rail Trip & Sleepover

Friday 25th and Saturday 26th Nov 2011 – City Rail Trip
We catch a train to the city. Meet up in Federation Square for some activities focusing on “Art in the City”. Then we catch the train home again for a sleep over at the Scout Hall!

How awesome is that?!

Rough time line:
FRI 5:30pm – Drop sleep over gear at the 1st Eltham Scout Hall
FRI 5:45pm – Move to station
FRI 6.16pm – Catch train to Melbourne
FRI 7.08pm – Arrive at Flinders St Station
FRI 7.30pm – Meet at Federation Square
We will be moving as a District from activity to activity. The focus will be “Art in the City”
… out and about …
FRI 8.41pm – Train leaves Flinders Station Returning to Eltham at 9.33pm
… return to hall to sleep …
SAT 9:00 to 10:00am – Pickup from the 1st Eltham Scout Hall after breakfast

Gidday Guys, as we discussed last week at Cubs, this week will be meeting on the WEDNESDAY night for our compass games. This week we will put some of our compass theory into practice as we play games along the Diamond Creek using compasses and navigation.

This week we will be looking into Boomerang Test number 6, the Symbols of Australia. Be prepared for a round of inter-six trivia, some art work and some games with flags!

Boomerang Test #6. Symbols of Australia
BRONZE
i.) Flags: Show you know the composition of the Australian Flag.
ii.) Emblems: Tell your leader of two places where you would see the Australian Coat of Arms.

SILVER
i.) Flags: Describe the flag of your State or Territory and show an understanding of its components.
ii.) Emblems: Describe the emblem of your State or Territory and show an understanding of what it means.
iii.) Flora and Fauna: Name and describe your State or Territory flora and fauna emblems.

GOLD
i.) Flags:
- Teach another Cub to correctly roll, hoist and break the Australian Flag.
- Show an understanding of the different ways of flying the flag, e.g. mourning, distress etc.
ii.) Emblems: reproduce the Australian Coat of Arms and explain the meaning of each emblem.
iii.) Flora and Fauna: Name and describe the floral emblem of Australia and why it was chosen.

This Week 2011-Nov-10 Rock Climbing @ Hard Rock

We have a Cub Booking at Hardrock Nunawading – Cubs & Brownie group bookings run for 1.5 hours and the cost per person includes; entry, group instruction, climbing harness hire and climbing shoe hire. There is no charge for leaders assisting with the belaying.

COST: $16.00 per Cub paid in cash to Baloo (who will pay for the Group) – please do not pay the Gym directly.

MEET: 6:45pm at The Hardrock Climbing Centre,
16-18 Varman Court, Nunawading

CLIMB: 7:00pm to 8:30pm

WEAR: Uniform top, scarf to be worn to venue. Wear tracksuit pants, or similar free movement clothing. Footwear – sneakers or similar (climbing shoes are not necessary)

PARENTS: Any parents who are able to attend to assist with the belaying are welcome to stay for the evening, and it is good fun! – Our group requires 1 adult for every 3 Cubss. Leaders/assistants are not charged and may only participate in the safety rope work (belaying), they are not permitted to climb.

Welcome to the annual running of the Gellibrand Derby, famous for the turn of speed shown by some of the competitors. This year due a very wet track we will not be having our famous snail race, but we will continue in the Spring Carnival spirit. Be prepared for horse racing, fashions on the field – although maybe not in the manner that you might expect
The horses are on the track!

Explain about different kinds of cooking fires and demonstrate at least one

As we discussed on Thursday night, most of the ‘open fire’ cooking you will do in Scouts is now done in fire drums, the days of the open fire pits are disappearing. While our foil packages were cooking on the coals we looked at some of the other cooking systems we might use for different forms of camping.

We looked at;

Hex stove (Hexamine Solid Fuel Tablets)
MSR Whisperlite stove (White Gas, Shellite)
Trangia (Alcohol, Metholated Spirits)
Jetboil Group Cooking System (Propane)
Canister Stove (Butane)
Cobb Oven (Heat Beads)
Dutch Oven (Coals)

We decided that Alcohol Stoves were the best option for hiking with Scouts.
